With my mind confused like a
lamb on a public road, I stood up from the bench and slowly walked
towards Abby's ward. I at least believed that Kneeling beside her bed and
saying a prayer, a miracle would happen. God was the only hope I had left with,
for I couldn't think of anywhere else to get the cash at the moment.
Entering the ward, Abby had not yet been awake, She was
beautiful with her eyes shut. Her whole face was covered with a smile, it's
like the angels were entertaining her during sleep. Just looking at her made
tears roll out of my eyes knowing that soon or letter we no longer going to be
together.
I could no longer hold my tears, they kept coming out. My
heart grieved that I couldn't do anything to save the only happiness I had left
with.
While still kneeling, I suddenly felt a hand touching my
right shoulder. Before I even turned, I had a male voice talking to me. The
voice was dry though gentle, it was as if the owner had spent two days singing
non-stop. It was the kind of voice that could not scream even in the time of
need.
"She
looks beautiful, she seems to be a good girl."
I immediately turned around to see the man, but his face
didn't look familiar to me. He was a thin, tall, brownish man. The wise say,
"a man gets grey hair for four reasons. A stressing wife, tough life,
sinful price or aging." The man had some gray hair in his well-shaved
beard and short hair. With his black suit and red tie, he looked gentle Manish.
I then decided to stand up, but he stopped me.
“No, no, no,
don’t even bother. I understand the situation you are in right now,”
Even with his words, I still stood, stretched my hand for a
shake.
"I am
sorry for your daughter." He said as we shook hands.
“Yeah man,
thanks” I replied with a low voice while trying to recall if I hadn’t truly met
this man before.
"Five
years ago, I too went through this situation." He said while looking at
Abby.
I didn’t know what to reply next other than joining him at
starring at Abby, and so he resumed the conversation.
“She was five,
her name was Alice,” He said with a smile as if he recalled her face.
“Her name is
Abby. She’s five too,” I said while controlling tears.
The man then turned to me.
“She is going
to be fine brother, I guarantee you that.”
I laughed while wiping away tears.
“ I hope
so, I truly hope. I mean she would be okay if she had a father and not an idiot
like me.”
He turned to me and placed my hand on my shoulder.
“You have
done so much for her. There is nothing to blame your self of. I believe Abby is
proud of you.”
“How can
she be proud of a father that can't afford cash for her final treatment!”
The man inhaled and exhaled slowly then turned towards Abby
and started starring at her.
“Perhaps
I may know a place you can get the amount you need for her therapy”
I immediately turned
to the man and looked him directly in his face.
“Where?”
I asked.
“I heard
your whole conversation with the doctor,” He said while still not looking at
me.
“I was
sitting beside the bench you two stood.” He now turned and looked at me.
“It’s
okay, just tell me where I can get the cash.”
The man kept quiet and looked at me. It's like he wasn't
sure about what he was about to tell me.
“Well……..” He stumbled.
"Just say it, man, it's my daughter's life that we are talking
about here and she has no much time remaining.”
While looking straight at my eyes, he drove all his energy
and said to me.
“I
can give you all the cash today, but first you have to help me complete a
task.”
“Just tell me the job man.”
"It isn't anything hard. All you need is getting a package from
someone around the city center."
He sounded joking
though his face seemed serious.
“You are just going to give me $15,000/= by delivering a package!”
He smiled and moved more close to Abby and held her hand.
"How can I let her die, she's just like my Alice. She also died
because I failed to pay for her surgery.
From that day forward I vowed to never let another kid loose life on my
watch. The $15,000/= isn't your payment, rather me doing what I could have done
to my long-gone baby."
He then turned to me and smiled saying. “I hope you
understand”
"Am
sorry for your loss" I said with sympathy.
“It's
okay. That was a long time ago, at least now I have a chance to put my soul at
peace by doing this one good thing,” He said smiling..
“So where
I the package?” I asked, eagerly wanting to finish the task.
“You will find everything detail at the
reception after one hour. For now, just stay with your daughter as I go prepare
the cash." He said while glancing at his watch turning out to take a
leave.
“Thank you
so much man, I don’t know how I can ever repay.
The man smiled looked at me and said, “Just do good to
someone else” and left.
It was just after I finished watching the man leave the ward
that I felt someone holding my fingers. It was Abby, I knew her touch. I stared
at her little beautiful hand, then my eyes went straight to her face. And as
soon as our eyes met she gave me an angelic smile.
"My
baby is awake…" I said softly as I bent and kissed her forehead.
Abby just smiled back without saying a word.
“How are you
feeling honey?” I asked her while sitting beside her bed.
“Am good
papa, am doing okay.” She said smiled as her eyes started getting wet.
I knew her well, she was lying.
“It’s okay
honey. Just tell papa the truth. Tell me how you are feeling.”
Abby looked at me for
some time without saying a word. Tears just rolled out of her beautiful eyes.
"Why are
you crying, honey. It's okay, talk to me. I am here for you." I said while
wiping out her tears with my arms.
"It's
paining dad. My whole body is in pain," She finally admitted though in
tears. I couldn’t control my tears either, at least not this time.
“I am going
to be fine dad, right?” She asked as the held my arm again.
“Of course
you are going to fine honey. Papa is going to make sure that the pain goes
away.” I said as I wiped off my tears.
“Promise?” She asked as she stretched her last finger for I to vow. She
believes that a promise wasn't complete until we connected our little fingers.
I stretched my small finger too. And she broke the union.
“ Yes
honey, I promise .”
Indeed I promised. Ooh yeah, I did make a promise.
SHALL SULEIMAN BE ABLE TO KEEP HIS PROMISE TO ABBY?
WHAT IS THE PACKAGE SULEIMAN HAS TO DELIVER?
The next episode is on its way.
